Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce has officially hung up his sneakers, ending a remarkable 19-season NBA career. The 40-year-old forward announced his retirement in a statement released through the Players' Tribune on Wednesday, October 13, 2021.

Drafted 10th overall by the Celtics in 1998, Pierce quickly became a key contributor for the franchise. He helped lead Boston to its first NBA championship in 21 years in 2008, earning Finals MVP honors in the process.

Known for his clutch performances and fearless leadership, Pierce was a 10-time NBA All-Star, four-time All-NBA selection, and an All-NBA Defensive Second Team honoree. He ranks third in Celtics history in points scored (24,021), second in rebounds (8,954), and fourth in assists (4,451).

In his retirement statement, Pierce expressed his gratitude for the fans, teammates, and coaches who supported him throughout his career. "I've given everything I have to the game, and I'm proud of what I've accomplished," he wrote.

Pierce's legacy as one of the greatest Celtics and NBA players of all time is secure. His jersey is retired by Boston, and he will undoubtedly be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
