Osprey: The Majestic Sea Hawk
A Cosmopolitan Bird of Prey
Distribution and Habitat
The osprey (Pandion haliaetus), also known as the sea hawk, river hawk, and fish hawk, is a diurnal fish-eating bird of prey with a cosmopolitan distribution. It is found on all continents except Antarctica, with the exception of some areas such as the Arctic and the Sahara Desert.
Physical Characteristics
Ospreys are large, powerful birds with a wingspan of up to 6 feet. They have dark brown upperparts and a white chest and belly. They have hooked beaks and strong talons for catching and holding fish. Ospreys are known for their distinctive "mewling" call.
Hunting Behavior
Ospreys are specialized fish-eaters. They hunt by soaring over water bodies and diving down to catch their prey. They have remarkable eyesight and can spot fish from great heights. Once they have spotted a fish, they dive down and catch it with their sharp talons.
